How quickly does iron infusion work?

Your iron levels will be restored right after the infusion. It may take anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks before you start to feel better.

What are the side effects of IV iron infusion?

Most people do not experience any side effects. 1 in 10 people can experience flu-like symptoms, such as muscle or joint ache, headache, or a mild fever. This may last a few days after the infusion and can be improved by over-the-counter medications as recommended by a healthcare professional. Some people may feel some nausea or have a metallic taste in their mouth, which will resolve on its own. There are other, more rare side effects. How painful is an iron infusion?

You may feel slight discomfort when the needle is initially inserted, but the infusion process itself is not painful. You may feel some itching or a slight burning sensation that will resolve on its own.

Are IV iron infusion safe?

IV iron infusions, when prescribed by a physician and administered by trained healthcare professionals, are safe and effective. In very rare circumstances, a person may develop a severe allergic reaction. This is the reason why iron infusions are administered in a medical setting with healthcare professionals who are able to identify and treat allergic reactions immediately.

Are IV iron infusions safe in pregnancy?

IV iron infusions during pregnancy, when prescribed by a physician and administered by trained healthcare professionals, are safe and effective. In very rare circumstances, a person may develop a severe allergic reaction. This is the reason why iron infusions are administered in a medical setting with healthcare professionals who are able to identify and treat allergic reactions immediately. Please note that infusion in pregnancy requires continuous fetal monitoring. Due to this, we are unable to provide infusion during pregnancy. We are able to provide infusions post-partum.

What is IV Therapy?

IV stands for “intravenous”, which mean it is administered through the veins. IV therapy is the delivery method of medications and fluids into the veins. It is administered by a healthcare professional, usually a nurse, for a variety of different medical reasons.

Why an IV Treatment? Can’t I just take pills?

Some medications, such as certain medications that treat rheumatoid arthritis, do not work when taken by mouth and need to be injected directly into the bloodstream. Other medications, such as iron, work better and faster when provided as an IV as compared to taking pills by mouth.

How many IV treatments will I need?

The number of IV treatments depends on your prescribed medication and your medical condition. Some IV treatments, such as Monoferric for iron deficiency, only require one treatment. Whereas other IV treatments, such as Remicade for rheumatoid arthritis, require regular treatments on a long-term basis.

How long until I feel the results of my IV treatment?

The timeframe for when you start feeling better after IV treatment depends on your prescribed medication and your medical condition. We suggest you discuss the specifics of your treatment plan with your physician.

What are the side effects of IV therapy?

Side effects of IV therapy depends on your prescribed medication. Some side effects include pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site, headache, nausea, and rash.

How long will my appointment be?

The duration of your IV treatment depends on your prescribed medication. Most IV therapies take around 30 minutes to 2 hours. If it is your first appointment, the nurse will need to gather some information from you, which may take 15 minutes in addition to the infusion time.

Do I need a Doctor’s prescription?

Yes, we require a doctor’s prescription before we can provide you with IV therapies.

Why would a patient need IV therapy?

There are many different IV medications that treat various medical conditions, such as iron deficiency, vitamin deficiencies, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and other autoimmune conditions. A person may need IV therapy if their doctor decides it is the best treatment option for them based on their medical history and medical condition.
